Finances are spoken of quite a bit in Scripture. 2 Corinthians 9:1-7 is one where the Apostle Paul is giving clear instructions about what is means to be a Christian. Paul has been encouraged by the Corinthians church and their desire to give financially. He proceeds to give directions about the acceptable way to give: generously, deliberately, and freely.
We give generously. Paul has been boasting to the people of Macedonia about the Corinthian Church (v1), these must have been a generous people to initiate boasting from Paul. Let me boast about the church I get the privilege of serving as Pastor. OCC is a generous church. Our members and attenders give so generously and we are so grateful to them. We also give away increasing amounts to ministries and churches across the globe – we give generously.
We give deliberately. 2 Corinthians 9:7a says: You must each decide in your heart how much to give.” I love this because it suggests that we should be deciding before we give, just how much we are going to give. This is not a case of turning up and opening up the wallet hoping something respectable falls out. This is intentional giving. At every service we give our offerings. Every year in the month of June we have a month of generosity where we give away every penny we receive. Knowing this means we can give deliberately and intentionally asking the Lord what we would want us to sow into His Kingdom.
We also give freely. Verse 7b says: And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” If you feel pressure or you are giving reluctantly then feel free to put your wallet away. We give because God has first given to us. We give because our lives have been so transformed by the Kingdom of God we want to sow into that very Kingdom to see more lives transformed. It is God’s money that He has given to us to steward and so we give joyfully knowing there is no better return on our investment than an investment into the Kingdom of God.
